Mabel Erevelles, a senior teacher at Good Shepherd school, Nungambakkam and an active member of Our Lady of Light Church, Luz passed away in the USA on Oct.17, 2021. She was 86.
Mabel started her career as a teacher in Karnataka and marriage brought her to Chennai. Her children attended Good Shepherd and during one of her visits to the campus, was offered a job, which she took.
She handled classes 9 and 10 and taught English and Geography. Mabel made a name for herself as a teacher with her innovative, involved and imaginative teaching, so much so that students whom she taught from the 1980s to 1995 still recall vividly her classes.
“Her students said that she would get the girls to dramatise some extracts, in English as well as in geography and this impacted them,” recalls her daughter Sushma who is a Alwarpet resident. Memories that Mabel’s students shared with the family after news of her passing trickled down locally, included how she would get students to draw the world map freehand and stun visiting teachers with their skills.
After retirement, she resided in Teynampet and attend the church in Luz where she actively guided youths who read the Bible at Holy Mass, ensuring the pronunciation and delivery was right.
Mabel was in the USA to be with a daughter and her family and stayed on for some seven years. She leaves behind two daughters and one son.
