Last-hour shopping for the Pongal festival was hitting a peak this Thursday evening at the far end of South Mada Street, off Sri Kapali Temple.
Every available street space was filled in by hawkers, all working in tandem to make quick sales.
Thoranams, sugarcanes and the manjal kothus . . .
A small set of the manjal sold at Rs.50 and it was double the price for the bigger set. Sugarcane set was priced at Rs.100 and thoranam sets were selling at Rs.40 here and at Rs.60 there.
Earlier this morning, mini lorries emptied loads of all these at the street corner.
Vegetable selling hawkers are also stocked well, with sales steady through the evening.
