Karthigai Deepam celebrations took place at Sri Veleeswarar Temple on South Mada Street, Mylapore on Thursday evening.
There was a break in the rain though a warning for a cyclonic weather later in the night was given, enabled a number of people to be present at the temple.
At the end of the rituals, the sacred fire was taken out to set alight the chokka pannai that was set outside on the road.
