Vijayalakshmi, a veteran tambura artiste and long-time resident of Mylapore passed away on May 23.
With her passing, the Carnatic music world has lost another artiste who was like a link between the past and present in the field, said one of her co-artistes.
Vijayalakshmi accompanied a large range of artistes on the concert stage. She was known for her simplicity and self respect. Always punctual at the concerts where she had to play the tambura, she would pleasantly greet the artistes for whom she was playing.
On the morning of a concert she would call up her co-artistes to offer her services if she was free. During the busy December Season there were days when she would have back to back schedules.
