One of Mylapore’s most loved and respected doctors, Dr. S. Nageswaran passed away on Friday night, May 14 at his home in Poes Road 2nd St. in Teynampet.
His clinic is on TSV Koil Street, off South Mada Street.
The doctor, following in the footsteps of his doctor-father, Dr. Sambasivan who also served a few generations of Mylaporeans was known to have some unique qualities that drew hundreds of patients from Mylapore and beyond.
In paying tributes to theĀ doctor, people recalled how the doctor’s smile, light talk, humour and warm approach ‘made you feel good soon after you met him’. He was known to make light of even the most tense moments, set patients at ease, suggest very basic medicines and not tall medical check-ups and was at ease with kids as with adults and seniors.
People recalled that three generations of their families consulted him at his little clinic.
The queue outside his clinic’s door was long and so people had to make do with a token system; they said they would pick up a token, go back home and come back on time to check in.
Nageswaran, son of Dr. K. Sambasivan and C. S. Rukmani Ammal was the youngest of four. He went to P. S. High School, and attended a course in medicine at JIPMER in Pondicherry; was in the batch of 1958.
He did his PG in paediatrics in Delhi and started private practice in 1968 in Mylapore.
He had two children. Son Dr. Prahalad practices at TSV Koil Street, carrying on the work of two generations of doctors.
The funeral was held on Saturday.

Dr Nageswaran was most unusual doc one has met in Madras. Our links goes to him for over 40 plus years. He caught things in lab reports none others even saw! Sharp mind, eye and being. An academic at heart , he could talk on dance or history with equal ease. That he talked long with few interesting patients meant irritating those waiting in lines outside but he carried on saying” it is okay we rarely get to meet (since you are healthy!) and come from far…” Far meaning Delhi and Bangalore! He treated patients first through their minds then body because he knew mind often controlled body. His loss means we no more will benefit by his benevolence and good guidance . Owing to 40 year plus relationship with us, he never even took any fee from us. We dedicate our next yearbook http://www.attendance-india.com to him. He read it page to page, as also my culture column in The Hindu for some years. Dear doc lives on forever;he immortalised himself through his selfless work for humanity.
Dr. Nageswaran was my doctor for many years and helped me in a very difficult situation by recommending me to a right specialist for my surgery. I owe him a lot for that. May his soul rest in peace. My condolences to the family.
Our family Doctor too right from 2006 when I came to Chennai. His smile & wit always in memory. Went to his clinic on 1st October & got this shocking news from Sivakami Medicals person. Post moved to Ramapuram & due to COVID lost touch with Dr for the past 16months… May his soul rest in peace…
Dr. Nageswaran will be sorely missed. He was so pleasant and funny that a visit to the Doctor was a breeze. Condolences to his family.
The approach of Dr Nagesvaran , his patience and his smiling face made the patients recover immediately
There are lots of Doctors but none like him. His personality bubbled with goodness, uncritical acceptance, humour. His diagnosis was instant, sure and unerring all the time. There was a simple atmosphere of sheer goodness and regard that cured us! He was our strength for 52 years. Feels a very personal loss. A great devotee of Periava.
It is a great loss to his family, friends and all patients like us for whom he has so long been an irreplaceable savior in all circumstances of physical ailments and has served almost four generations of most of our Mylapore families. The news has shaken all of our hearts. Vijayalakshmi Janakiraman
