Since the past few weeks, civic workers have been constructing broad pavements along the canal side of Kalvi Varu Street in Mylapore.
The work is a part of the Chennai Corporation project, that aims to beautify this street with attractive lights, walkways, parking area, and dense trees.
Said a contract worker, in charge of the project, “We are currently constructing a 2.5 m wide pavement. And work is on to construct two children’s park and an open gym just beside it.”
The workers are also constructing a wall to separate these structures from the spaces, that house illegal cow sheds. Says the contractor, “Initially, the pavements and parks will be opened for the public. The other side of the canal will be developed after Chennai Corporation clears the illegal sheds.”
He adds that in the coming months, the Corporation also plans to clear encroachments alongside the Buckingham canal. “Once that is done, we will be constructing pavements, and cycle track along that side of the canal. We also plan to restore the canal and provide facilities for boating here.”
