Urbaser Sumeet, the new garbage collection agency appointed by Chennai Corporation is all set to start conservancy operations in Mylapore in October though a date is not fixed yet.
On Sept. 24, hundreds of colour coded garbage bins of the agency were unloaded and parked at Chennai Corporation’s playground off Brodies Castle Road opposite Jesus Calls hall in R.A.Puram.
Their battery-operated vehicles and bins have also been here for some time now.
The agency will be handling conservancy operations at 7 zones of the city (Zone 9 to 15). Teynampet zone (Zone 9) under which a large part of Mylapore neighbourhood falls and also Ward 173 of the neighbourhood that comes under Adyar zone (Zone 13) are included in it.
Says Chennai Corporation’s Conservancy Inspector (CI) attached to Ward 173, “The contract of the old agency is getting over by September 30. From October 1, Urbarser Sumeet will start garbage collection in the neighbourhood.”
Dr V. R. Hari Balaji, Head, Information Education Communication (IEC), Urbarser Sumeet, says “Initially, we will start our operation at zone 13 of Chennai Corporation. We will extend it to the other 6 zones of the city in the following weeks.”
Soon, he says, the colour-coded bins and battery-operated vehicles, stocked in the R A Puram playground will be transported to different areas of Zone 13 to facilitate garbage collection and transportation.
“We have divided this zone into various regions. At every region, we will be collecting three kinds of waste – dry waste, wet waste and hazardous waste.”
