NGO Sevalaya which is based at P. S. Sivaswami Salai, Mylapore partnered with Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) to distribute grocery kits worth Rs. 7 lakhs to 420 famililes of Irula and gypsy communities in and around 25 villages at Madurantakam, Chengalpattu district on July 13.
According to a press release, each kit contained rice, dhal, sugar, salt and oil. All the beneficiaries have lost their only means of income due to the lockdown. While FCA sponsored the project, Sevalaya identified the beneficiaries, coordinated the purchase of the provisions and organised the distribution event. All precautions with respect to mask wearing and social distancing were strictly adhered to by the volunteers.
Sevalaya has been running an orphanage and a senior centre at Kasuva Village at Thiruvallur for more than three decades. They also run community colleges in 8 locations in five districts in Tamilnadu and one in Puducherry. For details contact them at 9710907675.
