Chennai Corporation has started sending migrant labourers sheltered at its community hall in C.P.Ramaswamy Road to their native places in northern parts of India.
Says a Corporation official who manages this shelter, “A few days ago, we sent around 26 migrant labourers to their native places at Uttar Pradesh, Telangana and Maharashtra. Now, only 26 are left at this community hall. They will be sent in the coming weeks.”
Since late March, around 52 migrant workers were sheltered here. They could not go home as all bus and train services got cancelled following lockdown.
He says that the Corporation arranged buses to ferry the workers to the central railway station. “From the station, they were sent in special trains arranged by the government.”
