A week long classical dance festival will be inaugurated at Music Academy, Alwarpet today (Jan. 3) evening. Consul-General of Belgium to South India, Mark Van De Vreken, will inaugurate the event. Dancer-guru Priyadarshini Govind will receive the ‘Nritya Kalanidhi’ award. An Odissi performance by Arushi and Madhavi Mudgal will follow.
The fest is on till Jan. 9. Several senior artistes including Narthaki Nataraj, Priyadarshini Govind, Alarmel Valli and Malavika Sarukkai will be performing at this festival. Other works that will be presented include guru V. P. Dhananjayan’s ‘Thyagaraja Vaibhavam’, ‘Alapadma – The lotus unfolds’ by Singapore based Apsaras Arts Dance Company and a Yakshagana presentation by Keremane Shivananda Hedge Group.
Panel discussions on various aspects of classical dance will also be held from Jan. 4 to 6. At T. T. K. Road, Alwarpet. 10 a.m. onwards.
