Around 50 people donated at the Chennai Corporation’s ‘reuse and reduce’ sale held this past weekend. Says Jayakumar, Conservancy Inspector of ward 123, “The donated items largely included clothes (sarees, T-shirts), electronics (TV remote, computer keyboard, cable wires, mobile phone chargers, handbags, and pet bottles.”
Jayakumar says that most of the items barring a few electronic items sold out. To help people from all sections of society, the Corporation sold each item at a nominal price not exceeding Rs.100.
The sale was held at Corporation’s community hall, next to Mylapore MLA office campus at C.P.Ramaswamy Road, Alwarpet. “In all, we sold items for Rs.1, 100,” he says.
The civic body now plans to hold ‘reuse and reduce’ sale regularly on the second Saturday of every month. The sale is mainly aimed at reducing the amount of garbage going to the landfills.
Prior to the sale, people may donate items at their corresponding division offices. They may also swap the stuff they no longer use with items collected by the civic workers.
For the residents who are unable to visit the division offices (division 123,124, 125 and 126) for donation, the Corporation is also providing a facility of doorstep pick-up. Residents may call the Conservancy Inspector (CI) of their division to avail this facility. The items that can be donated include toys, gently used clothes, utensils, electronics in working condition, footwear, backpack, bicycle, umbrella, raincoat, blanket, and bedsheet.
