Chennai Corporation’s indoor badminton stadium at Karpagam Avenue has opened after renovation. For the past few months, contract workers of a private agency were carrying out renovation and repair works here.
Now, the civic body has handed over the maintenance of the stadium to this agency.
The indoor sports facility has two badminton courts with carpet flooring. While a first-aid kit, restroom, and a drinking water facility is available, there seems to be no changing room and storeroom as promised by the manager of the agency at the time of the renovation of this facility.
The stadium will be open from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. People can use the facility on an hourly basis. The agency charges Rs.1000 per month for maintenance of the stadium. It will be let out for free for students studying in Corporation schools and for the children of Corporation staff.
While some residents have started using the facility, others are disappointed as just a patchwork has been done for the indoor stadium. Says Sasi Madan, a resident of the area, “As the building was in a very bad state it should have been demolished and reconstructed. We are disappointed as only a superficial work has been done.”
She adds that the maintenance fee is too high. “Many residents will not be able to afford such a high maintenance fee of Rs.1000.”
The indoor badminton stadium is located at Karpagam Avenue Fourth Street, next to the public park here. Ph: 8939144461
