On the eve of Karthigai Deepam at Sri Kapaleeswarar Temple, Mylapore, volunteers placed earthen oil lamps on the steps of the temple’s tank.
Every year, some 20 volunteers guided by Sreekanth, a senior temple volunteer decorate the tank with thousands of lamps.
Says Sreekanth, “From tomorrow (December 11) afternoon we will start pouring oil in the lamps. It takes at least three hours for us to complete this process.”
The ‘natural’ illumination inside the temple tank will be on for three nights.
As the lamps are set in the open, Sreekanth says the ones which may face strong winds will be lit with additional wicks.
