For the past few weeks, Chennai Corporation contracted teams have been renovating the Corporation Complex at C. P. Ramasamy Road, Alwarpet.
Civic officials say the renovation work was taken up as the building was in a bad condition.
Now, it is being whitewashed and repainted. In addition, the civic body has planned to construct a rainwater harvesting (RWH) structure alongside the building which has a row of shops on the ground floor.
Said a Corporation official of ward 123, “There were only a few percolation chambers at the rear of the building. As rain water stagnates in front of the building, we have planned to construct one 15 ft. deep recharge well there.”
Later, if need arises more recharge wells would be built, he added. PVC pipes will connect the terrace to the RWH well to tap the water at that end.
Flooding is common at this place: and since the water also brings in muck from the area, it becomes slushy too. In the past, there were plans by the civic body to contract drains but nothing came of it.
