A piece of high-value property located off San Thome High Road which originally fell under the management of Sri Payandiamman Temple, Nadukuppam in Triplicane was secured by the state’s Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments department amidst some drama on Wednesday afternoon.
Valued at about Rs.8 crores, this property, alongside where the Foreshore Estate arch used to stand was given on lease. HR&CE officials said the lease expired some 8 years ago but the family which leased this property had taken the issue to court.
The family lost the case and the state department quickly secured it with the help of a large number of policemen and women.
The occupants of four shops including the popular Tamil Nadu Bakery and a residence had to vacate the premises and move out goods even as officials sealed the properties, pasted notices on each door and completed this operation even as noontime traffic slowed down to take in the drama.
