Recently, Padma Prakash, a resident of Karpagam Avenue, R.A.Puram has started selling Kodaikanal Malai Poondu ( Kodaikanal Hill Garlic) at her house. She sells 100 g of this garlic at Rs.70.
This variety of garlic, known for its medicinal and preservative properties is grown in the Kodaikanal Hills located at Dindigul district. A few weeks ago, Geographical Indications Registry has granted the Geographical Indication (GI) tag to Kodaikanal Malai Poondu (Kodaikanal hill garlic).
Padma says, “I source the Kodaikanal hill garlic from a vendor in Kodaikanal. It looks smoky and unlike normal garlic, it does not get spoiled easily. Also, few pieces of a bulb are enough to get a good taste similar to a food that contains more than 5 or 6 pieces of nattu poondu (country garlic).”
Padma is an entrepreneur who sells a variety of cereals, pulses, cold-pressed oils, and home utility products and door delivers the same to her customers. She says she sources these products from her friends or traders after she is satisfied with its quality. “I personally use all the products at my house before selling them,” she says.
After procuring, she markets the products through social media platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp.
She is a member of R.A. Puram based NGO – Marketing Organisation of Women Entrepreneurs (MOOWES).”Six years ago when I started out my business, MOOWES gave me an opportunity to establish myself as an entrepreneur. After a few years, I started selling products independently. I also put stalls at the exhibitions conducted by them,” she says.
Now, she has a few regular customers.”My family has been a pillar of support in my journey,” she adds. For more details contact Padma at 9940165272. Her facebook page is Sreshta Saamagree.
