The Mylapore port was as much a centre of trade as the Mamallapuram port under the Pallavas. In a much later age, retail trade in Mylapore thrived, and continues to, in all the streets around the temple and extending further.
Madras Inherited which works in the the field of heritage, is hosting a paid Heritage Walk on August 24; the guide will take guests along the length of Kutchery Road, discovering the trading establishments that existed and still exist or, in the case of quite a few, have taken a completely different form today. From places that sold Madras Curry powder that was used in the Buckingham Palace, the market that sold goods carried in a boat via the Buckingham Canal and the green lung of the area that was once a pond, among others.
The walk ends at Spirit of the Earth on Desika Road where a healthy breakfast will be served!
