On August 7, Guru Poojai Vizha took place for Sundaramurthy Nayanar and Cheraman Peruman Nayanar at Sri Kapali Temple, Mylapore.
In the evening, the temple volunteers made circular floral decorations for the deities, to be carried in procession.
“It is believed that both Sundaramurthy Nayanar and his close aide Cheraman Peruman attained moksha on the occasion of Swati Nakshatram in the Tamil month of Aadi. Hence, Guru Poojai is celebrated for them every year on this day, ” says Balaji gurukal, a head priest of the temple.
Special abhisekham took place for the deities in the morning. In the evening, after a special alangaram and deeparadanai, the deities of Sundaramurthy Nayanar and Cheraman Peruman were taken out in a procession on Yanai (elephant) and Kuthurai (horse) vahanams respectively.
