Every Saturday, a small organic exhibition is on at Jupiter Hall on Kamarajar Salai, R. A. Puram. Called ‘Infinite Saturday Weekly Market’, it offers only organic and home-made food products.
This market is the brainchild of two young women, Ramya Devi and Lavanya.
Ramya who owns the hall said, “This hall is located in a prime zone. I wanted it to be busy through the week in a good way. My friend Lavanya is interested in organic products and often visits the exhibitions that display them. The idea got going.”
Since Lavanya has contacts with several sellers of organic products, holding the Saturday event got easy.
“On the first Saturday we got together sellers we knew. I printed 10,000 pamphlets and circulated them in the area. Now people have started coming forward to sell their products here,” said Ramya.
At present each stall is charged Rs 100. If business grows, Lavanya plans to shift the market to the air- conditioned halls situated on the first and second floors. Then the rate would be Rs 1000 per stall, as rental.
“Our main aim is to bring the buyer, seller and entrepreneur under one roof,” said Lavanya.
Products range from herbal medicines, floor cleaners, soaps and shampoos to cosmetics, textiles and personalised invitation cards. Organic ice-creams will soon be on sale.
Krishna Prasad from Srinivasa Avenue who was at the exhibition said, “Public interest and awareness about organic products is very high. Now we need to ensure that the products we buy are genuine. Such exhibitions will help.”
The duo plans to use Whatsapp and let people know about the stalls and items in the exhibition in future.
The market is open every Saturday from 10 a. m. to 5 p.m.
