Sevalaya NGO, Sevalaya, a charitable organization head quartered in Mylapore will be displaying vegetables, and some of the bakery products made in their community college, on every Monday at their store.
Organic farming is one of their flagship initiatives along with community colleges which give skill training to the rural youth, including school drop outs, among others. The range will include muffins, veg puff, coconut/ butter biscuits and sweet buns among others. Craft items like copper bottles, handmade bangles, earrings, cloth bags, organic vibhoothi (sacred ash), and more items are aimed at avoidance of plastic use.
Sevalaya’s initiatives create effective awareness among villagers on the need of organic farming and serves as a field for Sevalaya’s agri-students’ practical training. “In Sevalaya’s farm, active cultivations take place, by using only natural fertilizers, cow dung, and thus strictly avoiding chemical fertilizers to prevent nutrient characters of the soil”, says Ganesh, the associate vice- president at the NGO. “While the yields are used by Sevalaya’s campus kitchen, we also wish to create more awareness among people and we distribute the organically cultivated vegetables in the city”.
The donations collected from the general public will be used to educate rural poor for giving them free education.
