Mylapore is a haven for saree shopping and the newest store to add to the list of handloom saree stores is Panjavarnam. Set on Luz, this is the physical store of the online shop www.panjavarnam.com run by Vijayalakshmi for the last 5 years.
A cosy set up with handpicked antique furniture, artifacts and interior reflecting south Indian culture, this place offers a unique experience for shoppers interested in handloom sarees.
“It started off as a journey into re-weaving an exact replica of my grandmother’s saree”, says Vijayalakshmi. “Panjavarnam began as a result of wanting to bring together the best weaves and designs that are not so easily available from the best artisans and weavers of India”.
The customers wanted to physically see the sarees and feel the fabric and hence they felt the need for an experience centre. The sarees are handpicked, curated, designed and also customised at times and sourced directly from the weavers from around India and this is the USP of the store that no two sarees are alike or the designs repeated. Vijayalakshmi runs the centre with her husband Ganesh.
Kancheevaram silks, Poochampally, tussar silks, kalamkari silks, linen sarees are a few varieties of the handlooms available here. “The range starts from Rs. 3000 onwards and go upto a lakh depending on the material cost and workmanship that goes into making the saree”, says Ganesh.
The Panjavarnam Experience Centre is located at ground floor, 8/2, Karpagambal Nagar, Luz.
Store timings: 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Ph: 9840758137.
