Driving licence and vehicle registration certificates (RC) are now given in the form of Smart Cards.
Transport Minister M.R.Vijayabhaskar inaugurated the smart card system for licences and vehicle registration certificates on Jan 22 at RTO office South Chennai, Thiruvanmiyur.
The system was earlier introduced a few years ago in Thiruvanmiyur, Sivaganga and Cuddalore.
The smart card will have a chip embedded in it.
“This chip will have several security features. It will give the entire vehicle details when its read with the chip reader. It also has a barcode which will give details like name, date of birth of vehicle owner and other details of the vehicle on scanning,” says superintendent, Mandaveli RTO office.
“No one can create a duplicate copy of the smart cards or tamper with them,” he says. “People can get the smart cards during the time of licence/RC renewal or when they request for name/ address change in them,” he adds.
Vehicle owners and driving licence applicants can book their appointments online by visiting www.parivahan.gov.in for various services like change of name/address in licence or RC, application of new licence or licence renewal.
They can visit the Mandaveli RTO office off St.Mary’s Road during the allotted time.
The documents required for the service will also be mentioned in the online process. The fees will depend on the service requested. The smart cards will be issued on the same day after the document verification and fee payment.
