The Bird Race is a dawn-to-dusk event where large numbers of experienced amateurs and budding
birdwatchers spend a whole day spotting and identifying birds in an attempt to record as many
species of birds as possible.
At the Chennai Bird Race, teams of 4 fan out to visit various birding spots
in Chennai. Experts will be available on request to enable new initiates learn the finer points of bird
watching.
K.V. Sudhakar, President, Madras Naturalists' Society (MNS) and V. Santharam, Director, Institute of Bird Studies, Rishi Valley, are the Coordinators for the Chennai Bird Race. They say that the event has been attracting increasing numbers of participants since the 1st edition. Like other years, this year too they expect an enthusiastic response. The MNS would like to invite people to use this occasion to learn more about birds and start a new hobby. All you need to be equipped with is enthusiasm and perhaps a pair of binoculars!
The Chennai Bird Race has (since 2014) eschewed competition and wants participants to bird watch
for the pleasure of it and to sensitise them to the environment around themselves, says Sudhakar a senior birder and Mylaporean who runs his chartered accountancy firm in Alwarpet.
No prizes are awarded, but at the end of the day the participants meet to discuss the ‘finds’ of the day and to regale each other with the encounters they had.
