The Additional Commissioner of HR&CE department which manages all state temples and its lands, N. Thirumagal was arrested in the city on Sunday by the TN Idol Wing Police for what it said was her involvement in the swapping of three idols at Sri Kapali Temple in Mylapore during her tenure here as Deputy Commissioner in 2014 when the kumbhabishekam took place.
The officer was taken to Kumbakonam to the special court set up to try idol theft cases, presented before a magistrate who asked the police to produce her in court on Monday.
Thirumagal had got interim anticipatory bail in the Supreme Court. In the High Court the officer denied any wrong doing.
Police investigating this case filed by a Srirangam resident have said that critical records pertaining to the period when the idols swap are said to have taken place.
