C. Aravindan, 22, a resident of Perumal Kovil Thotam (a TNSCB tenement) in Mandaveli is training for the ‘Master Trainer in waste management’ certificate in a course held under the ministry of environment and forest’s Green Skill development programme.
The programme is from Dec 4 to Jan 25, 2019. It is being conducted on the IIT Madras campus by Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board (TNSCB) and Department of Environment, Tamil Nadu.
Professors and scientists from Anna University, National Academy for Management and Technology and officials of Chennai Corporation are training the group.
A bus pass and a stipend of Rs.250 per day is given. Lunch and snacks are also provided during the training.
“I always wanted to clean the city and spread greenery. But I didn’t know how to do it. After joining this course only I’m understanding the issues and challenges”, says Aravindan, a B.E graduate.
“I want to learn about waste management and create awareness and implement it in my own area first. Then I will move on to other areas in Chennai”, says Aravindan whose father is a daily wage labourer at a construction site.
“It is a Central Government scheme. Hence this course has an added value. After this batch, department of environment is going to conduct this programme for students who have completed 10th/12th. For them, they can be master trainers. In addition to that, they will be able to get government jobs as well,” says Nirmal Raj, a TNSCB official.
