The celebration of Karthigai Deepam at Sri Kapali Temple in Mylapore on Thursday evening was a solemn and traditional affair.
Since 6 p.m. people kept streaming into the temple and lighting earthen oil lamps. The rain had taken a break for the day and this allowed lots of people to be at the temple for the celebration.
At about 7.30 p.m. traffic was curbed on East Mada Street where the chokka panai had been set up this year. It was then set alight and as the flames rose into the air and the rain held on, it was a sight to behold for the crowd which had gathered beyond the road dividers and manned by local police.
