Free the Tree Campaign covered Luz Church Road, Mylapore on October 28. It was led by the NGO, Nizhal and 22 volunteers took part. A similar campaign is planned on November 4, Sunday and Mylaporeans are invited to take part in it.
This campaign intends to remove advert boards and nails hammered into the trunks and branches of trees in public spaces because such acts lead to the death of trees.
A Nizhal volunteer said, “We completed a stretch from Luz Circle till Nageshwara Rao Park. We have noted down 18 various kinds of tree abuses and will report it to Chennai Corporation.”
The volunteers removed nails, commercial boards and banners from trees on both sides of the road. They also removed tyres and tree guards.
Says a volunteer, “Since there are many trees on Luz Church Road, we would be doing another FTC in the same location this Sunday and we want people to lend a hand.”
