Businessman A. Mohamed Azam, a resident of Bishop Gardens for nearly 40 years passed away at the age of 76 in Chennai on July 14.
His family said Azam grew a thriving business in the leather and footwear field in the 1970s and early 80s – and forged businesses in Russia, Italy and many other countries.
The New Great Shoe company at Pallavaram ( once a leather production hub in the city) was his fort of business sadly now does not exist, said the family.
The Masjide Mohamadiya at R. A. Puram on Kamaraj Salai was built as a “joint effort of my father and a few more generous individuals in the early 90s”, says his son.
“It was initially a small mosque with an asbestos sheet and down the years, they were able to have a bigger two-floored mosque in the premises. He was the vice president of the mosque till recently he resigned from the post, ” Azam’s son says.
Azam was well versed in Urdu and had a good collection of Islamic books in Urdu and in English in a small library at his residence.
