Wellknown Carnatic music vocalist Aruna Sairam has been chosen by The Music Academy for its prestigious Sangita Kalanidhi award. She is a resident of Alwarpet.
The well-travelled artiste will be decorated with the award, considered to be a prestigious one artistes on January 1, 2019 at the end of the Academy’s annual Conference and Concerts of the famed December Season.
The Academy team headed by N. Murali said the choice was unanimous. Mumbai was Aruna’s home when she was growing up and learning music.
But the trips she made to Chennai to meet and learn from other gurus drew her closer to this city, which she made her home some years ago.
Rasikas say that she brought a new sound to the concert, tapping into her deep voice and her abhangs got very popular. Her style perhaps also drew bigger audiences at her concerts.
She has also collaborated with Western artistes and one one collaboration choral church music got much attention.
The Sairams are residents of C. P. Ramaswamy Road.
