Alwarpet was witness to some action-packed drama when a local police officer chased a criminal, pinned him down and had him arrested.
The hero – sub-inspector Ilayaraja of Mylapore’s Crime Department. The villain – Dokkan Raja of Pallakkuma Nagar, a sprawling colony in Luz opposite the old Kamadhenu theatre.
On Saturday, Ilayaraja got a tip-off that Raja was visiting the Luz colony to collect his regular mamool there. Raja had been out of the police rada for some years now; he is known to be involve din murders and robberies on the city’s fringe and an ally of a don called C D Mani.
The police formed a team and fanned the fringes of Pallakkuma Nagar and as dusk fell, sighted Raja. The latter also picked by the scent of the police; he got on to a bike and raced down Luz Church Road. The sub-inspector chased him, then managed to hop on to the goon’s bike. The two crashed on to the busy road near Sri Anjaneya Temple and with the help of passersby, the criminal was pinned down.
