Civic body teams are busy tackling flooding issues

The break in the rain has provided a window to local Chennai Corporation teams to get some priority work done. Work that will held make life easy for residents when it rains again.

Executive Engineer of Ward 173, Chennai Corporation, K. Varadarajan says “We have identified the problem areas in R. K. Nagar, Mandaveli and M. R. C. Nagar and we are working on removing blockages and silt from several drains there. In several areas, we are digging up the road, setting up new passages and closing them with manhole covers. This will ensure faster access for workers.”

He says chute pipes are also being cleaned. In MRC Nagar, his team is conducting a survey to find out if the water in local drains can be redirected to the sea near the area around Leela Palace Hotel. “This is a long term project however,” he adds.

An official at Ward 124 said, “In October, we had cleared the drains in Venkatesa Agraharam zone, Mandaveli Street, Saradapuram Main Road and 2nd Street and R. K. Mutt Road. It helped. We haven’t received any complaints from residents about blocks.”

An official at the civic body’s Unit 122 says that work is going on near the Chamiers Road traffic signal junction to address flooding issues.

Sundarajan, assistant engineer of Unit 123 says that blocks in drains have been removed at two places on St. Mary’s Road.
