‘ One hundred years of Nritya Bharateeyam’ is the theme of a major conference that begins this morning at C. P. Art Foundation in Alwarpet. Hosted by the Indian Council of Historical Research, scholars and dance legends taking part will present their study and records of various aspect of Indian classical dances over the century.
Bharata Illango Foundation of Asian Culture founded by dancer-scholar Dr Padma Subrahmanyam partners ICHR ( south region) for this seminar.
The inauguration is on Thursday June 1, 10 am. Sessions will be held through the day and continue on Friday.
On Day One, Dr. Sarala talks on The Inheritance of Artistic Values from Devadasis, V. Sriram talks on Emergence of Sabha Culture, V A K Ranga Rao talks on ‘ Influence of Indian Classical Dance on south Indian cinema’, Dr Anuradga Jonnalagadda speaks on the Kuchipudi traditions.
There will be also talks on the Kerala dance traditions, Kathak gharanas, comparative studies on Sattriya-Odissi and Andhra Natyam.
On Day 2, dancers and scholars which include Priyadarshini Govind, Leela Venkataraman, Sandhya Purecha, Indira Bora, Darshana Jhaveri and Sonal Mansingh among others will present papers.
Seminar curator Padma Subrahmanyam says that ICHR invited her to curate this seminar and that even if it might not be possible to document the Indian dance forms since Vedic times, looking at it this past 100 years would be valuable for study and research,
On June 2, 4.30 p.m. onwards the key outcomes of this seminar will be presented at a formal valedictory event.
The C. P. Ramaswami Aiyar Foundation for Indological Research is also a partner in this seminar.
