The Car Free Sunday concept has formally been rolled out on the Marina. It happened this Sunday morning, 6 a.m. onwards.
The service road of the Marina beach, from the Light House end to the Vivekananda Illam point was closed from 6 a.m. for about three hours, blocking entry of automobiles.
The freed road space was used to set up stalls for fun events and games and create nooks for children to play and enjoy some games while seniors walked on as they do every morning. There was also an exhibition.
Car Free Sunday has been run at the Elliots Beach in Besant Nagar for two years and is now implemented on the Marina.
The programme is jointly run by Chennai Corporation, Chennai City Police and The Hindu.
It will be on every Sunday morning.
