Kapaleecharam Committee, a NGO working in the area of civic issues in Mylapore says that it succeeded in maintaining the mada streets clean to a great extent during the annual Panguni fest, which is now in its final phase.
A note from the NGO says that its volunteers spoke to hawkers on the streets to discourage spilling waste in the public space and guided annadhanam donors to contain food wastage and dumping of leftovers.
The NGO said that the police advice to annadhanam donors to regulate the food distribution also helped to maintain cleanliness.
While there was less of wasted food on the mada streets this season, the mounds of paper and plastic were bigger and all over the mada streets and on the main roads of Mylapore, Luz and Mandaveli – contributed by people who dumped plates and paper cups after having their fill at annadhanam stalls and food hawkers.
The civic workers though cleared all the mess the night of the arubathumoovar procession.
