Holy Week services at local churches

MT CHOIR CSI THOMAS ENGChurches in the neighbourhood got busy this past Sunday as the Lenten season entered its final phase. Called the Holy Week, this is a week in the church calendar that commemorates events leading to the foundation of the Eucharist, the condemnation and crucifixion of Jesus and his resurrection.

Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter services mark the week‘s calendar starting April 9.
At San Thome Basilica, the main Palm Sunday service featured a procession of palm-bearing religious and laity.
Confessions here have been scheduled on Wednesday evening.
The Maundy Thursday Mass in English is at 5.30 p.m. and in Thamizh at 7 p.m.
On Good Friday, Way of the Cross and Mass in English is at 2 p.m.and in Thamizh at 5 p.m.
The youth of this parish will present a sound-and-light show on Jesus’ condemnation and death on the cross. At 8 p.m. on the cathedral’s campus.
Easter vigil Mass here is on Saturday; starts 9 p.m. in English and 11 p.m. in Thamizh. Easter Sunday Masses follow the standard Sunday Mass timings.
At CSI St. Thomas English Church, San Thome the Palm Sunday service was held in the morning and that evening, the church choir presented a Cantata themed on Jesus’ suffering and death; held inside this 175-year-old heritage church ( photo featured here).

The Palm Sunday procession of the community at Our Lady of Light Church in Luz started from St Isabel’s Hospital on Sunday morning. Parish priest Fr. Thumma and brother priests led the congregation in this short, symbolic procession.
The church youth will enact the events leading to the death of Jesus at the Good Friday service on April 14 afternoon.
Similar services will be held in all other churches in the area.
