Masi magam, which falls in the Tamil month of Masi (Feb-March), will be celebrated on Mar. 12 this year.
On Sunday morning, the deities of several local temples including Sri Kapali Temple, Sri Karaneeswarar Temple, Sri Nagathamman Temple, Sri Virupaksheeswarar Temple, Sri Malleeswarar Temple and Sri Angalamman Temple will pass through Kutcheri Road before being taken to Marina Beach where poojas and rituals are held. Thousands are expected to gather at the beach on this day as it is believed that those who take bath in these water bodies on this days will attain moksha and rid themselves of their sins.
At Sri Kapali Temple, the deity will be specially decorated and a deepa aradhanai will be peformed before the procession starts.
At Sri Karaneeswarar Temple at Bazaar Road, Mylapore, a purappadu will be held inside the temple first before the procession starts. Theerthavari will be held at the beach. On the way back the deities will go around the Mada Streets before finally entering the temple. At this temple, the deity is taken outside the Mylapore area (Mada Streets) only once a year on this day.
