All local branches of public sector banks are presenting a deserted look as the strike called by bank-staff began today. The gates were shut and there were small queues outside the ATMs which are located in the same building as the bank.
Private bank branches are however working.
At 11 a.m. the front yard of State Bank of India’s Mylapore branch on the busy Luz Church Road was deserted.
Last night, the local ATMs saw some frenetic activity as people withdrew cash in view of the strike.
The bank staff have put out a list of demands including compensation for staff who worked to address the demonetisation process overload and demanding action against big loan defaulters.
