The Tholkappia Poonga or the Adyar Eco Park as it is commonly known, will now be open to the public on Saturdays also, in addition to Tuesdays and Thursdays. A maximum of 60 people will be allowed to visit the park on these days.
The area around the Adyar Estuary which initially supported a variety of flora and fauna degraded over the years due to the garbage and sewage inflow into it. A three phased restoration project was undertaken about ten years ago and the area was converted into a park which is now abundant in plant, bird and animal life.
Check out the guided tour which is currently being offered to the public from 2.30 p.m. – 4.30 p.m on Tuesdays and Thursdays. On Saturdays, the public can visit the park in the morning from 10.30 a.m – 12. 30 p.m. and in the afternoon at 2.30 p.m. Tickets can either be booked online or at the ticketing centre at Adyar Eco Park. Students and teachers can visit the park from 9.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m., Mon – Fri. The park will be closed on all public holidays. For details visit www.chennairivers.gov.in. Ph: 24614523.
