To discourage people from parking autos, travel vans and call taxis in their area, the residents of Thiruveedhi Amman Koil Street (West), Mandaveli have come up with a simple and unique solution. They placed painted drums at the entrance to their street and even decided to grow plants in them thereby improving the green cover in their neighbourhood.
Bala, a resident, says, “For a long time, we have been telling the auto and cab drivers not to park there, but they wouldn’t listen. So about a month ago, we decided to take matters into our own hands by placing drums there. We soon realised that empty drums could be displaced easily and so we filled them with sand and stones. Later we painted the drums with colourful modern art so that it looked pleasing to the eye and then decided to use the sand and mud to grow plants”.
The residents group, who meet every Sunday morning, are an active lot and have been consistently working to solve issues raised by the residents. In addition to solving parking issues, the residents have also implemented garbage segregration techniques successfully.
