Radio professional Vijayalakshmi Murthy, aged 77 years, passed away on April 27.
She retired as Station Director, All India Radio and served a significant part of her career at the Chennai station in Mylapore.
In Chennai, at All India Radio, Vijayalakshmi Murthy was in charge of Carnatic Music, youth programmes, Malayalam programmes, Sanskrit programmes and many more.
She was with AIR at a time when the television was not such a major force to reckon with and radio had very high listenership. She was instrumental in launching and encouraging many speakers and musicians.
Her Sanskrit production ‘Amara Sandesham‘ received a commendation at a prestigious all India level competition organized by AIR.
She was promoted as Asst. Station Director and served in that role in Chennai and Coimbatore and served as Station Director in Tirunelveli and Pondicherry. In Tirunelveli, she conceptualized and produced a weekly radio serial on Carnatic Music which had a successful run for one year.
A resident of Mylapore for over two decades, her demise is deeply mourned by her family – B. A. Suresh (son-in-law), Vidya Bhavani Suresh (daughter) and her grandchildren, Mahitha Suresh, Harshitha Suresh and Nipun Suresh.
