Veteran Bharatanatyam guru Indira Rajan and senior Carnatic music vocalist and guru Suguna Varadachari will be decorated with medals and citations at the annual awards ceremony of Sruti Foundation, the body which also manages Sruti magazine, a publication for the performing arts.
The event is on Feb.6 at the Sri Sankara Vidyashramam School, Thiruvanmiyur, south Chennai.
Indra Rajan was born into the Isai Velalar family in Tamil Nadu. Her grandmother Sundarambal was a renowned Sadir dancer of her time, mother Sundara Kamakshi was a well-known musician, and paternal uncles K N Dandayudhapani Pillai and K N Pakkiriswami Pillai were eminent natyacharyas.
She had a long dancing career and went on to become an outstanding nattuvanar, one who highlighted the style of the past in the present.
Following the award event is a theme concert curated by Gowri Ramnarayan. It is tiled ‘Braving the Ban; MS and Tamil Isai.’
The concert features Amrita Murali, R K Shriram Kumar and Arun Prakash.
