Ash Wednesday service was held during the day’s Holy Mass at local churches and it signalled the start of the 40-day Lenten season for Christians.
At the service, the priest applies ash on the foreheads of people who attended Mass, a symbolic act which reminds that man has come from dust and to dust he will return.
Lent is that time in the church calendar when people are called to repent for their shortcomings and lead a sober life.
This photo of the Ash Wednesday service was shot at Our Lady of Visitation Church on St Mary’s Road, R A Puram.
