Residents of Raja Street, Mandaveli celebrate pongal with Kolam and Karagattam

On Jan 10, the residents of Raja Street, Mandaveli and neighbouring streets got together once again for the second theme based kolam/rangoli competition organised by the Mandaveli Raja Street Residents Welfare Association. The theme was ‘Pasumai Bharatham’ and 13 teams of five members each, including a kids only team, turned the whole street into a colourful collage of kolams.

Creative ways of maintaining a clean and green environment such as garbage management, organic farming, planting trees, energy conservation and more was depicted through the kolams. Cash prizes were given to three teams – Vilash, Karpagambal and Vaikuntam for their designs. Three special prizes and certificates were distributed to all those who participated in this event.

In addition to thRaja street - Karakattamis, a team of artists from Chennai Weekend Artists captured every scene of the event with their beautiful sketches. The competition was followed by a ‘Karagattam’ performance by artists Karthik and Rashmi from Tanjore, silambattam by students – Ramana and Roshan and a bharatanatyam recital by Uthra Ramesh.

Later a pongal pot (paanai) was set up and pongal was distributed to all the residents. The chief guest of the event was Sumathi Srinivasa, CEO of Elite Women Confederation and editor of WE magazine. The event was sponsored by the residents and friends of Raja Street, Kauvery Hospital, Farmerie Organic Products and Mansarovar Currency Exchangers.
