While most of the neighborhood kiranas closed , some of the big retailers in the area stayed open on the weekend during the rains. Ambika Appalam Depot on 4th Street Abhiramapuram saw a brisk business on Saturday. ‘ Most of our customers called us and placed orders by phone. We delivered the items to their homes’ says store manager Babu. ‘People stocked up on staples like rice, bread etc in anticipation of the rains’ he says.
Gormei Market, in C. I. T. Colony, Mylapore, stayed open on Sunday too. ‘Business was as usual’, says owner Sriram Sridharan. ‘In fact, we held a cooking workshop for kids on Sunday evening, which had full attendance. People also shopped for essentials like bread, eggs and snacking items through the weekend’ he adds.
Maharaja Super Market, on SanThome High Road, also stayed open during the weekend. Sadik is an employee there and he says ‘ business was steady, although a little less than usual. We received orders over the phone and delivered the goods to the customers’.
