Senior Carnatic music percussionist, E. M Subramaniam passed away on April 23 due to multiple organ failure. Since he did not have any members of his family around, one of his sishyas did the final rites. A large number of his students took part in his funeral. He lived in Mylapore, behind the Luz Sri Anjaneya Temple.
EMS, as he was fondly called was a longtime teacher at the Govt College of Music here besides being a top line artiste.
He may not have been seen in the arclights or got his name splashed in new age percussion jams but EMS is ranked about the ghatam greats. Reason why he was decorated with the Sangeet Natak Akademi award and by the state’s Kalaimamani award too.
He was in this field for over 40 years and was a ‘A’ grade artiste of All India Radio.
