K. V. Raman, a Mylaporean for life expired on May 31. He was 56 years old.
He was owner of Lakshmi Appalam Depot which was based at his residence at Chidambaraswamy 3rd Street, Mylapore. This business was started by his father Venkatachalam Iyer who hailed from Kalladakurichi – he travelled to Madras early in life and set up a appalam shop near the Taneerthurai Market in Luz in 1937. Later, it was shifted to their residence.
Raman completed his schooling at P. S. High School and did his A.M.I.E. (Electronic and Telecommunication). He worked alongside his father.
The Depot not only sold appalams but also podis which were made at home. The appalams were also distributed to shops in north India.
Raman was also a lover of music and used to build quality audio systems, says his son. These were made at home under the brand name ‘ Sugo’.
Raman is survived by his wife Kamakshi Raman, son R. Vivek and daughter K. Priya.
