The mada veedhis of Mylapore came alive on Sunday. It was Karthigai Deepam and the bustle was understandable.
Hawkers who sell fresh vegetables and flowers on the streets had trays of earthen lamps which were on sale.
As dusk fell, Srikant and his band of youth volunteers lit the lamps, hundreds of them which had been placed on the steps of the tank of Sri Kapali Temple. Later, the natural illumination was a grand sight in the darkness.
Lamps glowed from almost every home in the neighbourhood.
In the ‘sannidhi’ zones of Sri Velleswarar Temple and Sri Kapali Temple, the gathering grew in strength around the massive man-made ‘chokka panai ‘ waiting for it to be lit.
